On 15th June, 2018, at Tha Maharaj Community Mall, Phranakhon, Bangkok, Mr. Weerasak Kowsurat, Minister of Tourism and Sports, together with Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), presided to wave flag for launching the campaign and drive the Thailand Tourism for All by setting the campaign and explored route the three points of modern tourist destinations along the Chao Phraya River; Tha Maharaj Community Mall, Yodpiman River Walk, and Asiatique the Riverfront, Charoenkrung.
This was the campaign to drive business and service sectors related to travel to be improved, developed the friendly design, or prepared the facilities for people of all ages and all physical condition to access tourist attractions and services conveniently and safely. The design was international standard and friendly design in tourist destinations, hotels (resorts, homestay), restaurants, stations, public transportation, and services and public areas.
After the flag-waving ceremony, the Minister of Tourism and Sports tried sitting on a wheelchair to explore the facilities together with international wheelers in the area of Tha Maharaj. Although there was some friendly design, it was not for all areas. The wheelchairs had to be lifted difficultly in several points. Then, the Minister of Tourism and Sports led the team to get into the boat having Friendly Design which was only for people who used wheelchair heading to "Yodpiman River Walk" next to the flower market, Pak Klong Talat. It was the shopping place to experience the view of the Chao Phraya River with the fair Friendly Design. There was the ramp going almost every point from the pier to the shops in the building. The program ended with visiting the famous tourist attraction located along the Chao Phraya River, "Asiatique The Riverfront" in Bangkholaem area. The Minister of Tourism and Sports and the team of international wheelers explored the facilities in Asiatique and tried getting into the Ferris wheel to see the view of Bangkok and the Chao Phraya River. In the future, the executives of Asiatique confirmed that the Friendly Design will be improved and developed to serve the use of wheelchair users in order to drive and promote Thai tourism business for all people to be successful.
Minister of Tourism and Sports said after the exploration of the area for the Friendly Design in the tourist sites in the project of Thailand Tourism for All that he had tried sitting in a wheelchair to test the ramp, to use the toilet, to use the wheelchair running towards the pier, and to get in and out of the boat at the pier. He realized the real problem of not having enough facilities to accommodate the tourists of the elderly, disabled and wheelchair users including the families with children, pregnant women, and the tourists who needed to haul large dandelions or encountered many obstacles in accessing the tourist sites and public services. The information gained from this area would be used in improving the tourism policy in Thailand for all people of all ages and body conditions to be able to access the tourist attractions and services in tourism conveniently, cleanly, safely, uniquely and sustainably.
